It’s 6.30 a.m. in the morning, cold and it’s raining outside. The waves have been really good for the past few days. It started on the Christmas weekend and lasted all the way till New Year. Every each of our students had plenty of fun and the waves were catering from beginner to advanced surfer level as well. It’s peak time of the monsoon season now. Since Christmas day we had non stop surf lessons going on until now. Everyday new students – we love to share our experience with you. Wanna learn to surf in Malaysia you know where to go. We are always here waiting for you during the monsoon season.
Today’s Saturday 31st December 2016, the last day of the year: This weekend looks like it’s gonna be the peak of the swell. Normally today supposed to be the kick-off of Cheratingpoint Cup 2016 surf competition but we are postponing the event to next year. Wave/swell hight should be increasing by today and gonna last all the way through the new year. For all the students/customers that are coming this weekend please drive safely and looking forward to have you guys here. As for those having sessions this morning ….see you guys in a bit. There will be lots of fun waves and wishing every one a “Happy new year ” bye, bye 2016 and hello 2017……good health and good wealth to everyone!
It’s been our most busy weekend this season so far. It started on Friday (9/12/2016) and lasted until Wednesday (14/12/2016). Lots of happy students went back with a big smile on their face, which is our biggest target regarding our customers. Having students with us doesn’t just mean that we send them to the beach and try surfing – no, at the same time we educate them about the surfing ethics like “never drop in on others” and “how to read a wave or wait at the right point” in our advanced classes.
While the surf competition was going on last weekend we brought all our newcomer students for their session down the line. We had great conditions from Saturday until Tuesday before the swell dropped on Wednesday. Anyway it has been still ideal for those who are the first time on a surfboard.
Today, on 18th December, we are expecting the new swell/waves to come in. We are hoping there will be good conditions again and they will stay through the week up to the next weekend. Hopefully all our students from the last sessions enjoyed their stay with us and had plenty of fun as well. Looking forward to have you guys back here in Cherating again for another surfing experience.
Christmas and New Year is around the corner and it will be a long festive holiday for everyone. For those who wanna learn to surf we are here, waiting for you. Please prebook your surf packages or single lessons with us now, as we can’t promise to have anymore rooms or slots last minute. At this time of the year normally most of the rooms around Cherating are fully booked! As from our experience over the years the waves/swell will be really good at this time of the year. For more info please write to us at firstname.lastname@example.org or call us at +60129337590. We love to share our surf experience with all the newcomers and students……and you will bring back the memories of riding the first wave in your life. By the way, we don’t take photos of our students with Handys…)
It’s still the beginning of monsoon season and the swell is picking up really slowly. That’s kind of good to have slow waves for the students, a small swell is really ideal to learn surfing as the current won’t be that strong as usual. Recommended for the ones that never surfed before in their lives and we are willed to share the experience with you.
Looks like as if the “Cherating International Surf competition 2016” will be kicking off this friday on 9th December 2016 and we are wishing good luck to all the participants. For those who are free, please come over and have a look. We will be operating as usual.
Current update: We are waiting for the swell to pick-up but for surf lessons it’s still good to go. To all the students that have booked their surf packages/surf lessons with us – have a safe journey to get here and looking forward to have you guys with us.
Here are some shots from the last 2 weekends (26-27th November and 3-4th December 2016 lessons). Hope you guys were enjoying with us and we are hoping to see you again. Most of the shots were taken while they were riding their first south china sea waves…..and at the end of the day when our students are leaving…..there’s a big smile in everyones face who joined Cheratingpoint surf school for their first wave experiences.
So don’t waste any time and contact us to sign up for your first und unforgettable surf memory with Cheratingpoint!
The Monsoon season 2016/2017 has officially started a few weeks ago. Small swells are already hitting the coast of Malaysia, what is normal for the early season. Whereby there will be lots of small waves, what is really good for beginners that have never surfed before. Cheratingpoint surf school officially opened back on 12th November 2016 and on that weekend we were blessed with a few days of fun surf sessions with our students. Looks like this coming Monday the new swell is coming in and we are ready to take your bookings. We’re hoping to be blessed again with lots of good swells and good times this monsoon season.

We call upon Yang Berhormat Encik Khairy Jamaluddin to officially gazette the surf spot at Cherating, located beneath the northern headland of Cherating beach at Kampung Cherating Lama, as a surfspot that is protected by the Malaysian Ministry of Youth and Sports for the advancement of surfing in Malaysia. Cherating waves :-
form the breeding ground for young Malaysian surfing athletes.
are unique in the way the mellow waves break over a sand-based bottom, which is great for beginners.
produce reliable, consistently clean wave throughout the entire monsoon due to the area’s natural environment setup that is shaped by nature.
break in an easily accessible surfspot where no dirt track or boats are required to surf those waves.
are located near modern amenities where food and accommodation is conveniently available.
provide Cherating villagers with tourist income over the monsoon when other economic activities are of low demand.
After a new wave of surf tourism was introduced in the 1990s, Cherating has built and preserved a surfing legacy for more than 20 years with support from surfing industry giants, visiting world champion surfers and international surf tourists. However, the wave is threatened by coastal development and human negligence, as evidenced below :- https://www.facebook.com/klsurfrider/posts/1599867483644731
This dangerously threatens surfing waves which were created through many, many years of environmental formation by elements of nature because the natural environment is very, very sensitive.
The earliest surfing etched in the memories of Malaysian surfers today are of surfspots from the 1990s. Reliable surfspots are a scarcity in the east coast of Malaysia. Back then, there were 2 legendary surfspots known as great, long left-hand point breaks: “Quarry”(Teluk Kalong) and Cherating. Due to human activity, Quarry now ceases to exist because the wave is now extinct. Now, the other spot is under possible threat: Cherating.
In the last 3 years, a hotel chain has been cutting down trees from the northern headland of Cherating beach directly above where Malaysia’s best known left-hander wave breaks. Regular surfers at Cherating would have witnessed the gradual environmental deterioration on the headland due to the hotel development. The bottom of the headland is the special sweet spot in which waves that travelled hundreds of miles across South China Sea, break onto our local shores for our enjoyment. It created Cherating as it is known today: the surfing capital of Malaysia. The spot is special because the beach points to the west/south west where north easterly monsoon winds are blocked by the headland, allowing the formed waves to be consistently beautiful and well shaped for surfing because the sandbanks are also perfectly lined up along the shoreline to allow a long left wave to peel. Over the years, many have acknowledged Cherating’s beautiful wave and during the monsoon, scores of people from Singapore, Kuala Lumpur and several other towns in Malaysia congregate at this once sleepy village to surf pristine peelers and indulge healthily in the utter sense of happiness that surfing in the ocean provides. Having watched the development closely since it started where most of the environmental damage remained within the headland, we are now disturbed by recent photographs of the sandbank in Cherating being dug up. When the trees in the headland were destroyed, silt flowed from the headland onto the beach where(if not controlled) it can forever change the shape of the wave over the course of time. But now, the hotel chain is directly digging into the sandbank. PLEASE STAY AWAY FROM THE SANDBANK!!!
All past/present/future surfers in Malaysia, needs to unite and take action before we lose another gorgeous surfspot like how we lost Quarry to human development. If we lose Cherating, there is no other long left point break that still breaks consistently good in the thick of the monsoon with convenient access to accommodation/food and with easy road access from Kuala Lumpur. We need to take this threat seriously and protect our only reliable surfspot in Malaysia! There is nowhere else of such surf quality, my friends.
We believe at this time that this is just a case of a lack of education on the sensitivity of the natural environment and call upon The Royale Bintang Hotels & Resorts Group to please share the environmental impact assessment to help the surfing community understand the consequences of planned development activity so close to the surfing point break. Economic activity in Cherating village used to be very low over the monsoon but due to these waves, monsoon in Cherating is now a hive of activity because these throngs of surfers from all over Singapore and Malaysia brave possible flash floods and unstable weather to make the pilgrimage to Cherating, just for a chance to surf these magnificient waves. This brings economic income in the form of tourist ringgit to the villagers of Cherating who would otherwise be without an income over the monsoon months. If the waves disappear, it would be a great loss of income to the villagers of Cherating. Has this been included in the environmental impact assessment, if any?
The threat is real as exampled in the link below where Bali lost a surfspot due to hotel development except that in Malaysia, we don’t have anywhere else in Malaysia with a wave like Cherating.
Please share this post and the pictures below to raise awareness and stay tuned here for further action to take. If you want to be a part of this, please message over your email address. Help prevent Cherating from being on the extinct surfspots list!
Kepada sesiapa yang biasa pergi main luncur air di Malaysia, kita sebagai surfer Malaysia perlu bersatu untuk melindungi ombak Cherating dari kemusnahan akibat kecuaian manusia atau kelakuan manusia. “Monsoon season will be starting again late October/early November, ending Mid March”
In the month of March can be actually the last swell for the season. What ever comes after 15th March is just a Big Bonus that will mark “the” end of monsoon season. No one can tell when is the official monsoon end, but from the experience of surfing here in Cherating since end of 90’s, early March is normally the time to say good bye to monsoon. Good times never last long and where’s a beginning there will be always an end as well!! Anyway that was our last surf session with our Surf Package students, some teachers from Terrenganu. This time once again we had the pleasure to make our customers happy by having fun to the max with the waves. They will come back to Cherating again…once the new season is starting.
“Announcing our surf school is closed this month from 15th March 2016 onwards. We will be re-open again in November 2016”
